Suggested Visualization and Mapping Resources
Nice resource to play around with visualizing data. Data can easily be pasted in as a csv (which you can save directly from excel). It has lots of options for showing data and can export images.
Carto is a relatively easy to use tool for making interactive maps. We have a premium subscription; so make sure to use this link with your umich email address. There are very nice tutorials available on carto’s website.
Data Sources for India
Indiastat provides key statistics of India, including census, election, foreign trade, health data and more. For example, state-wise population density (1901-2011), state and regional level population (2001 and 2011), presidential election, state-wise voter turnout in general election (1967-2009), state assembly election(1962-2011) are currently available. To access the data, please click on a link called "IP Login" at the top of the main page.

The Indian Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation is the agency that administers several statistical offices including the Central Statistics Office and the National Sample Survey Office. The site provides data in reports as well as downloadable tables.
